چکیده

Abstract. We report the results of extracting the hard X-ray continuum spectrum of Cas A SNR from RXTE/PCA Target of Opportunity observations (TOO) and CGRO/OSSE observations. The data can rule out the single thermal bremsstrahlung model for Cas A continuum between 2 and 150 keV. The single power law model gives a mediocre fit (∼5%) to the data with a power-law index, Γ = 2.94±0.02. A model with two component (bremsstrahlung + bremsstrahlung or bremsstrahlung + power law) gives a good fit. The power law index is quite constrained suggesting that this continuum might not be the X-ray thermal bremmstrahlung from accelerated MeV electrons at shock fronts [1] which would have Γ ≃2.26. With several SNRs detected by ASCA showing a hard power-law nonthermal X-ray continuum, we expect a similar situation for Cas A SNR which has Γ=2.98±0.09. We discuss the implication of the hardest nonthermal X-rays detected from Cas A to the synchrotron radiation model.

Fast Variability of Nonthermal X-ray Emission in Cassiopeia A: Probing Electron Acceleration in Reverse-shocked Ejecta

Recent discovery of the year-scale variability in the synchrotron X-ray emission of the supernova remnant (SNR) RX J1713.7−3946 has initiated our study of multi-epoch X-ray images and spectra of the young SNR Cassiopeia A based on the Chandra archive data taken in 2000, 2002, and 2004. We have found year-scale time variations in the X-ray intensity for a number of X-ray filaments or knots assoc...

Characterizing the Non-thermal Emission of Cas A

We report on our analysis of the 1 Ms Chandra observation of the supernova remnant Cas A in order to localize, characterize and quantify its non-thermal X-ray emission. More specifically, we investigated whether the X-ray synchrotron emission from the inside of the remnant is from the outward shock, but projected toward the inner ring, or from the inner shell. We tackle this problem by employin...

In this study, some characteristics of a Mather type Plasma Focus (PF) device such as a discharge current, pinch time, ion flux and hard x-ray intensity has been investigated simultaneously in argon and nitrogen gases separately for various operating gas pressures and charging voltages of capacitor bank. It was observed that pinch phenomena was energy and pressure dependent in current sheath as...

A propelling neutron star in the enigmatic Be-star γ Cassiopeia

γ Cassiopeia (γ Cas), is known to be a binary system consisting of a Be-type star and a low-mass (M ∼ 1M ) companion of unknown nature orbiting in the Be-disc plane. Here, we apply the quasi-spherical accretion theory on to a compact magnetized star and show that if the low-mass companion of γ Cas is a fast spinning neutron star, the key observational signatures of γ Cas are remarkably well rep...
